Ticket only events: Tickets available from the Cemetery office.
Tickets for Bat Night and Butterfly Walk sell out fast due to limited numbers.
They cost £5.00 per person which includes a drink and biscuits.

Non-Ticket events:
Just turn up – no need to book.
If no price stated, we suggest a donation of £5.00 or, for Friends of York Cemetery and children, £2. Includes drinks and biscuits.

Walks meet at the Harriet Centre last 1½-2 hours & finish with your drink & biscuits in the Harriet Centre.

Please note: Only assistance dogs are permitted in the cemetery.

YORK CEMETERY WALKS AND EVENTS 2022

The full programme of walks and events has yet to be confirmed for 2022, so we have left details of 2021 walks and events on this page to provide a taster of what will be on offer. Meanwhile, please join us for the annual Friends of York Cemetery Residents Festival on Sunday 30th January 2022.

Friends of York Cemetery Residents Festival

Join us for a full day of activities, including a tour of the Chapel catacombs, self-guided walks, genealogists on site to assist with grave searches, a Victorian grave symbols tour, an’1837 and all that’ historical tour, a ‘make a birdfeeder’ workshop and a COYC I Travel York stall. Free tea, coffee and cake provided all day.

Inspired Summer Art Exhibition in the chapel

A group of local artists, using a range of media return with their inspirational exhibition.

“The Inspired Exhibition is made up of a group of 9 exhibitors; a mixture of painters, printmakers, textiles, jewellery, ceramics and furniture makers, who regularly show together as a group. We love talking to the public about our work and are excited to be showing in this wonderful space again.” Adrienne French, Inspired Summer Show organizer.

Guided walk exploring the fascinating history of York Cemetery. Visit the grade 2 listed Pritchett Chapel and the catacombs below.

When Your Time is Up with Dennis Shaw

Meet at the Harriet Centre for a guided walk, the final part of the Accidental Deaths Trilogy. The trail is located at the Eastern end of the cemetery, taking you around the Modern and Victorian sections.

Exotic Trees in York Cemetery with Clive Dawson

Meet at the Harriet Centre for a guided walk discovering the wonderful trees of York Cemetery, typical of those planted by Victorian landscapers to create a Garden Cemetery.

Listed Monuments and their Makers with Dennis Shaw

Meet at the Harriet Centre for a guided walk. This trail will visit the nine listed monuments within York Cemetery together with five sculptors and iron-founders responsible for their manufacture. Additionally, we will visit the grave of James Piggott Pritchett who designed the Chapel and laid out the eight acres of the original burial ground.

Gardens, Trees and Plants in York Cemetery with Clive Dawson

A walk through the cemetery viewing the gardens, ornamental trees, plants and wildlife in this eco-friendly environment. The site was awarded a Platinum Award by RHS Yorkshire in Bloom 2019.

History Through the Eyes of York Cemetery with Dennis Shaw

This 2-hour guided walk will give you a snapshot of local, national and international history as we hear about Victorian burials; York’s other Cholera burial ground.; Zeppelin and Baedeker Raids on York; York’s Crimean, WW1 and WW2 Military Heroes, and more ………

York Printmakers Exhibition in chapel

Returning exhibition from York Printmakers which previously featured 25 artists. Members use a variety of printing techniques, including lino and woodcuts, collagraphs, screen printing and etching, in styles varying from illustrative to abstract.

Geology in the Cemetery with Tom Berry and Liam Herringshaw

Meet at the Harriet Centre for an interesting and informative geological walk around the Cemetery, discover the multitude of rock types that make up the headstones of a cemetery.

The Royal British Legion Parade

The Royal British Legion will march to the Cross of Sacrifice for the wreath laying ceremony and service. Meet at the Harriet Centre at 12.50pm.

Local textile artists return with their impressive exhibition exploring texture and colour featuring Bridget Bernadette Karn’s remarkable wool paintings.

Carol Concert

The York Cemetery Annual Christmas Carol Concert in the stunning Pritchett Cemetery Chapel, a wonderful evening of traditional carols, accompanied by organ music, and of readings. This will be rounded off with delicious mince pies and fruit punch. This is the perfect evening to get you into the Christmas spirit! The carol concert is FREE – all donations gratefully received.

Please note that admission is by ticket only to prevent overcrowding.
