The Friends of York Cemetery (registered charity number 701091) was established in 1988 to support the cemetery staff in the management of the site. The Friends Committee meets every month and includes the Cemetery Manager and a representative from the York Cemetery Trust. The Annual General Meeting is held in May, when committee members are elected and all members of the Friends are welcome to attend the meeting to hear about the previous year’s activities and to vote.
Fund raising is via a programme of guided walks and events, private tours, grant applications and donations, which are used in a wide range of ways to support the Cemetery Trust in maintaining the site and buildings. Examples of recent expenditure include the purchase of tools and equipment for both the cemetery business and for volunteers; the purchase of fruit trees for the Heritage Orchard, and contributing to the ongoing maintenance of the Chapel.
