About us
York Cemetery Trust
York Cemetery has been owned and run by York Cemetery Trust since 1987 in accordance with agreed objectives.

The Trust is a non-profit making registered charity (no. 1075408) that maintains the site in partnership with The Friends of York Cemetery, also a registered charity (no. 701091). The cemetery is not affiliated with or funded by City of York Council or any local authority.
York Cemetery receives no maintenance grants and relies for the bulk of its income on the cemetery business. The site is managed under an ecological land management plan, which is implemented by our staff and volunteers. The plan allows for some areas to remain undisturbed to encourage and protect the habitat of much of the wildlife sustained by the 24-acre site. To this end, the Trust ask the public not to use chemical pest controls or weed killers on site.
If you would like to make a donation to help the work of York Cemetery Trust, please visit the Friends of York Cemetery page on this website.
If you wish to donate tools or material goods, please contact the Warden.
Who we are
The Trust is made up of a board of Trustees, all of whom are volunteers with particular skills and experience. The Friends of York Cemetery (registered charity 701091) support the Trust by, for example, raising funds, and providing guided tours and a family history service for the public.
The Trust currently employs 4 paid staff: the Cemetery Warden (full time) who is the overall manager for the site; the Office Administrator who manages the office (part time); and two full-time outdoor workers who dig the graves and do the general grounds maintenance. Apart from these 4 employees and occasional paid help, all other work at the Cemetery is done by volunteers.
The Cemetery Warden coordinates the different Cemetery groups and site users, and meets regularly with the Trust and Friends Committees, and the Volunteer Coordinators to discuss and advise about what is happening on site.
